Obstetric Medicine at FIGO 2025: Global Collaboration, Local Impact

The Society of Obstetric Medicine of South Africa (SOOMSA) was proud to co-host a joint international workshop on Obstetric Medicine at the FIGO World Congress in Cape Town in October 2025. The session, presented in partnership with ISOM, SOMANZ, MOMS, and NASOM, brought together global leaders in the field for an afternoon of lively discussion, practical learning, and collaboration.

The workshop focused on how Physicians, Obstetricians and Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists can work together to optimise care for women with complex medical conditions in pregnancy, with contributions from experts across Australia, the UK, Canada, India, Singapore and South Africa.

A highlight of the afternoon was the interactive case series, where registrars from Wits, UKZN and SU presented challenging real-world scenarios drawn from South African practice. The discussions — covering infectious disease, hypertension, critical illness, and liver disease — showcased both the depth of local expertise and the relevance of Obstetric Medicine in low- and middle-income settings.

The event underscored the growing momentum for Obstetric Medicine training and multidisciplinary care in South Africa, and the value of international collaboration in shaping sustainable, context-appropriate models of care.

SOOMSA extends sincere thanks to our international partner societies, sponsors and to all presenters, panellists, and delegates who made the session a success. The enthusiasm and engagement in the room reflected a shared commitment to improving outcomes for women with medical conditions in pregnancy — both in South Africa and worldwide.
